Everything you want to know about Breathing Science with Martin McPhilimey
Â
Founder of Performance Through Health, Martin is a leading voice in the Breathing world shedding light on the Science of what's really happening when we breathe!

Join us on Sunday 9th June
4 pm PT, 5 pm MT, 7 pm ET and Midnight UK time.
Dive into the scientific and psychological understanding of breath, sleep, and nervous system regulation for a healthier, happier, and more connected life.Â
Â
As Breathwork continues to become more widely known and accepted as a means for improving our health and well-being, it also becomes apparent that we know very little...Â
And that's where breathing science comes in.
It's no longer enough to brush off some of the deeper experiences had during breathwork sessions by saying "It's just your body releasing trauma" or to push those attending sessions to hyper-ventilate even more with the encouraging mantra of "get high on your own supply"
If Breathwork, and breathing facilitators or coaches are to be trusted and respected we must understand what's actually happening in our bodies, our brains and our chemistry.
They must understand how breathing and the practices they share interact and impact with the rest of the body's systems.
During this live session, we'll explore some of the myths and misconceptions around breathing...Â
Something Martin is only too happy to do, as he strives to deliver the highest quality of training and coaching to individuals around the world.

More about Martin
Â
After over a decade of working as a Respiratory and Sleep Scientist, Martin noticed a common pattern among his patients.
Many of them were not sick but misunderstood the connection between the mind and body due to prolonged stress.
Frustrated with the limitations of working in the medical field, Martin decided to quit his clinical career to build Performance Through Health, an online business aimed at helping people understand the link between sleep, stress, and breathing.
His vision is to create a world where people live healthy, happy, connected, and meaningful lives.
In 2023, Martin was inspired by the demand to establish the School of Breath Science, an online comprehensive training and certification program.
This program aims to deepen the understanding of how we can apply the science of breathing to improve well-being and performance.

What others say about Martin & his work...
"I’ve come away with so many actionable tools and strategies that have helped improve my sleep quality and stress levels."
“All that know me have commented on how much I have improved this year, and I owe it entirely to Martin and his breathing training program."
“I feel as if Martin put me in the best position to be competitive in my weight class at Western Australia’s strongman competition and I cannot recommend him enough”Â
Â
What to expect during this live event...
Â
Martin will share his direct knowledge, experience, and researched-based findings on all things breathing, sleep and nervous system related... because we cannot talk about one without another.Â
He'll share sometimes divisive and controversial views putting to bed some myths and warning of the dangers the breathwork industry faces as it continues to gain popularity.
Not to mention, answering as many of your questions as possible!
We'll explore:
- What's really happening during a consciously connected breathing session... and why (from a science perspective)Â do we often experience altered states of consciousnessÂ
- The link between sleep, breathing behaviours and our ability to focus and perform
- How does breathing interact with the nervous system and what practices work best for in-the-moment regulation?
- Should Breathwork be regulated?
- What happens in our brains when we breathe in different ways... can hyper-ventilation cause damage?
- Wim Hof Method... is it really safe, what's best practice from a scientific perspective?
- Are Breathwork facilitators educated well enough?Â
- Is there an argument for scientific baseline testing of breathing behaviours, and CO2 levels before the recommendation of breathing practices?
And much more!
What's the outcome?
We aim to share valuable facts and research-based information to support you in your breathwork practice, to provide guidance and support, answers to questions, and to ensure breathwork becomes a safe practice for all.
